OpenEaagles (Open Extensible Architecture for the Analysis and Generation of Linked Simulations) is a multi-platform simulation framework. It is designed to help build virtual, distributed, scalable simulation applications. Various applications including flight simulation, human factors studies, and operator training have all been used to develop virtual simulation systems. The framework includes interoperability interfaces to support the development of distributed applications because it includes interfaces that support the Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) protocol. A variety of DIS compliant distributed simulation applications have been built using this framework as a foundation.

A great advantage of the OpenEaagles framework is that it does not provide a main() function to be utilized. This enables the operator complete access of the construction and utilization of the framework, whatever the application may be. There is no default graphical user interface (GUI), allowing the user maximum flexibility to asses and incorporate their requirements.

Overview of OpenEaagles structure

Overview of the OpenEaagles structure.

OpenEaagles is written in C++ to provide object-oriented flexibility and portable cross-platform compatibility. Also the ability to provide high performance deterministic execution or the ability to run in “real-time” is a reason why OpenEaagles is written in C++. OpenEaagles provides the ability to run JSBSim as a rapid, high quality dynamics model in the creation of new flight simulators which is a reason why the Openae team feels it is necessary to spread the word to interested persons.
