AVL is a program for the aerodynamic and flight-dynamic analysis of rigid aircraft of arbitrary configuration. AVL comes with an extended vortex lattice model, a trim calculation analysis, and an eigenmode analysis. It employs an extended vortex lattice model for the lifting surfaces, together with a slender-body model for fuselages and nacelles. General nonlinear flight states can also be specified. The flight dynamic analysis combines a full linearization of the aerodynamic model about any flight state, together with specified mass properties. AVL can also compute various trim calculations including operating variables, control deflections and their constraints. Multiple trim run cases can be defined, saved and later recalled.

AVL was written originally in 1988 and modified by Mark Drela of MIT over the past decade. It is available for free under GNU license. More information and a download can be found at http://web.mit.edu/drela/Public/web/avl/ .
