Redmine is a project management suite built on Ruby On Rails (ROR). The software suite was originally created for use in software project management however it's recent progress has allowed to be actively used in all sorts of other areas (including engineering).  The beauty of Redmine is that it literally functions as an online application allowing users all over the world to collaborate on projects.

The basic Redmine application comes with a variety of modules which allows each project to be configured and tailored to the exact needs or objectives. Some of Redmine's features are listed below:

  1. Issues (or Tasks) can be created by one user and assigned to another
  2. Full fledged wiki is available for documentation; dedicated project forums allow for plenty of discussion
  3. Complete hook-up to repositories allows for code or document collaboration
  4. Document tab for dedicated version control of documents
  5. Email notification of events
  6. Calendar plugin
  7. Gannt charts
  8. Roadmap and milestone tracker
  9. Complete workflow configuration
  10. Plugin integration
  11. User access control
  12. Storyboard style issue management
  13. Agile process plugin

These are just some of the many features of Redmine!

There are many software packages which have been used mostly for software development in the past but are making their way into other areas, however Redmine seems to be one of the best. It's ongoing state of development make it a rival for many of todays top commercial packages.  openAE is so confident in Redmine that it actually uses this package as a back-end for website and project development (check out http://redmine.openae.org).

Redmine is for the most part quite easy to install and set-up on shared hosting servers; given that they have Ruby on Rails, SSH, and cPanel.
